M-Class standard equipment includes front sidebags, windowbags and a driver's kneebag. Rear sidebags are optionally available. The airbags offer protection aligned with the situation: the front airbags, for example, are deployed in two stages depending on the projected force of a frontal collision. The M-Class can also be fitted with an optional crash-responsive exit aid system in conjunction with the memory package. In the event of an accident, the steering wheel is moved into a more "favourable" crash position (depending on the severity of the impact).
If a Mercedes-Benz child seat with transponder is fitted on the front-passenger seat, optional automatic child-seat recognition can prevent the front-passenger airbag from deploying. Belt tensioner, sidebag and windowbag remain active in order to protect the young seat occupant.
An additional roll-over sensor in the airbag control unit can trigger all of the belt tensioners and both windowbags in certain roll-over situations.
If the system detects a severe side-on collision, the windowbags and sidebags offer additional protection. The windowbag unfolds like an inflatable curtain between the A and C-pillars, offering extra protection for passengers both in the front and rear.
Available for the front seats, the crash-responsive NECK-PRO head restraint system is designed to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries. NECK-PRO is integrated in the front head restraints, delivering support earlier to the head if the system identifies a rear-end collision. Crash sensors release pre-tensioned springs that push the head restraints forwards and upwards. After deployment, the head restraints can be returned manually to their original position. A seat belt reminder function for the front seats is also included as standard.
